Researchers earlier believed that European hippos became extinct at beginning of Weichselian glaciation but a new study confirmed that they survived until around 31,000 years ago, far into the last Ice Age. They analysed 19 fossils from Germany using radiocarbon dating, amino acid geochronology, and ancient DNA sequencing, confirming that these warm-climate animals outlived glacial conditions.
