A new species of venomous Physalia jellyfish has been discovered off Japan's northeastern coast. Named Physalia mikazuki, the 'crescent helmet man-o-war', it pays tribute to the famed samurai lord Date Masamune. The name not only symbolises its arched, sail-like float but also its geographic identity. It is characterised by tentacles that extend several metres to deliver intensely painful stings.
