The 'grovel' remark dates back to 1976, when England captain Tony Greig said his team would make Clive Lloyd’s West Indies "grovel" before the series. The word carried racial overtones, especially coming from a white South African, and deeply offended the West Indian players. West Indies dominated the series, winning 3-0 after England collapsed under pressure.
