Veteran investor Ramesh Damani said Dr Manmohan Singh "actually started India's 'tryst with destiny'" when he presented the 1991 Budget as the then finance minister. "It changed the course of Indian history. The Indian economy grew, the people prospered [and] the middle class was born," Damani stated. Dr Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.
