China is building a floating island that can survive nuclear blasts. Officially named the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility and designated as a major scientific infrastructure project, it will enter service in 2028. It uses rare nuclear-blast-resistant design that consists of "metamaterial" sandwich panels to turn catastrophic shocks into gentle squeezes, scientists said.
