A low-pressure area forming over the northeast Bay of Bengal is responsible for the heavy rainfall in Kolkata, which has brought it to a standstill. The weather department said the pressure is likely to persist for another 24 hours, implying that more rain could follow. From Monday to Tuesday, Kolkata received more rainfall than it did in last 22 days.
