Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), generated from the breakdown of larger plastic products, can penetrate deep into human tissues. Researchers have detected these particles inside atherosclerotic plaques (the fatty build-ups inside arteries). Individuals with MPs/NPs in their plaques had a 4.5 times higher risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attacks/strokes, the study found.
