Black Friday refers to the Friday after Thanksgiving in US, marking unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. In 1960s, police officers used 'Black Friday' to describe the chaos after large numbers of suburban tourists came into Philadelphia for holiday shopping. Later, retailers began calling it the day they "went into the black", meaning their financial books finally showed profit.
