A UNLV-led study has revealed how the timing of planet formation in our galaxy affects their composition and density. High-mass stars that die young scatter lighter elements like oxygen and magnesium, shaping rocky planets’ outer layers. In contrast, long-lived low-mass stars release heavier elements such as iron and nickel, crucial for forming dense planetary cores.
