US researchers found that a chemical in cigarette smoke can increase the odds of developing pancreatic cancer by changing the immune system's activity. When the cigarette chemical bind to the immune cells, it leads to release of a protein called interleukin-22, causing tumours to grow aggressively in mice with pancreatic cancer. Researchers confirmed the results in human immune cells.
