After the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025 gets passed, a person marrying for the second time will face seven-year imprisonment. Polygamy would become a cognizable offence, meaning the accused wouldn't get bail immediately. A special compensation fund for female "victims of polygamy" will be formed. Assam's Scheduled Tribe communities and Sixth Schedule tribal districts would be exempted.
