Peru’s 5,200 ancient holes were once a marketplace: Study

Archaeologists have uncovered that 5,200 mysterious holes carved into a ridge in southern Peru may have served as an ancient marketplace. Researchers found traces of maize, amaranth, squash, and cereals in sediment samples from the holes. The site likely hosted mobile farmers and fishers to exchange their products. The holes may also have helped display items for visitors.
