Maharashtra government has appointed lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor in Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case. Nikam earlier acted as special public prosecutor in cases such as 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and 26/11 terror attack. Deshmukh was abducted and murdered in December 2024, allegedly for opposing extortion attempt from a wind energy firm operating in the area.
