The Darbar Transfer, a 150-year-old tradition started by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1872, has resumed in Jammu and Kashmir after four-year pause. This practice involves shifting administrative machinery twice a year between Srinagar (summer) and Jammu (winter), bringing governance closer to people in remote areas. It was stopped in 2021 due to high costs of around ₹200 crore annually.
