Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister Inder Parmar triggered row by saying that 19th-century social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy acted as a "British agent" who worked to divide Indian society along caste lines. He claimed British had "enslaved" several Indian reformers, including Roy. Congress leader Bhupendra Gupta questioned Parmar's understanding of history and called his remarks "shameful".
