On the first day of Navratri, barley or jau is sown in an earthen pot. The grown crop is worshipped on Ashtami or Navami and then immersed in a water body. According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Brahma created the universe, the first crop grown was barley. It's said that sowing barley brings prosperity in the house.
