A new study revealed that volcanoes erupted on the Moon's far side billions of years ago. Soil samples returned by China's Chang'e-6 spacecraft contained volcanic rock fragments, with some dating back to 4.2 billion years. The Moon's far side, however, differs from the near side as it lacks large, flat lava plains, instead being marked by more craters.
