A butterfly’s wings are made of thin membranes supported by a fine network of veins. These membranes are covered with thousands of tiny scales, each an extension of a single cell. The powdery substance that rubs off when a person touches a butterfly’s wing is actually these scales, News18 reported. They give the wings their vibrant colours and offer protection.
