Labour Secretary Vandana Gurnani said the new Labour Codes retain all existing worker welfare and safety norms, including layoff compensation. The remark comes after trade unions said the codes encourage "hire and fire". She said the raised threshold for layoffs doesn’t change the compensation paid to sacked workers. The "re-skilling fund" in new codes will improve job opportunities, she added.
