Calling for reforms in India's legal aid system, Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath said that 70% of India's prison population comprises undertrials who haven't yet been found guilty. He added that most remain behind bars not because law requires it but because of systemic failures. Some charged with bailable offences remain in custody as they can't furnish bail, he said.
