Acid reflux is when food or acids travel from the stomach back to the throat through the tube connecting them (oesophagus), according to NIH. Acid reflux causes heartburn, which is a burning feeling behind the breastbone or in the neck, NIH reported. This feeling often gets worse after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or bending over.
