Scientists have identified a new type of lion call, the 'intermediate roar', shorter and flatter than the iconic full-throated roar. Recorded using 50 microphones and AI analysis, the sound always follows a full roar, revealing that lions' vocal behaviour is more complex than believed. Researchers say this could improve acoustic methods used to estimate Africa’s shrinking lion populations.
