Research shows that world's oldest cave art, found in Spain, was painted by Neanderthals and not humans. The red hand stencils, dots and abstract symbols were dated using uranium-thorium analysis of calcite layers and found to be over 64,000 years old, long before modern humans arrived in Europe. The study reveals Neanderthals possessed complex symbolic thinking and artistic creativity.
