Hiccups happen when something irritates the nerves that cause a person's diaphragm to contract. Gargling with ice water for one minute and sucking on a small piece of ice may help a person get rid of hiccups. Breathing slowly into a paper bag increases carbon dioxide in lungs, which causes diaphragm to relax. Holding the breath briefly may also help.
