Israel invoked Hannibal Directive when Hamas launched the surprise attack in 2023. The directive allows Israeli army to use maximum force to prevent soldiers from being captured, even if it puts their lives or those of nearby civilians at risk, Hindustan Times reported. It's reportedly named after Carthaginian general Hannibal, who chose death over capture by Romans in 181 BCE.
