A periodontal abscess is a pocket of infection (pus) that forms in gums and is more common in people with poor oral hygiene. Broken or damaged restorations such as dental fillings, crowns or bridges may also cause periodontal abscess which looks like a boil or pimple on gums. If left untreated, a gum abscess can lead to oral health issues.
