Scientists have identified Y1 receptor neurons in the brain that can override chronic pain. Acting as a neural switchboard, these cells become more active following injury, and survival cues like hunger or fear can switch off pain by inhibiting these neurons through neuropeptide Y (NPY) release. The discovery could lead to personalised treatments targeting pain at its brain source.
