Fossilised ear bones show fish had human-like hearing apparatus
short by Swati Dubey / on 04 Nov 2025,Tuesday
When saltwater fish evolved to live in freshwater, they developed a Weberian apparatus about 154 million years ago, much later than once believed. This intricate chain of tiny bones connected the swim bladder to the inner ear, transmitting sound vibrations. It enabled species like catfish and tetras to detect higher frequencies, with a range close to that of humans.
