On average, adult males tend to be about five inches taller than adult females due to a gene called SHOX, according to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal PNAS. The researchers studied the genes of 1,225 individuals with unusual X and Y chromosome combinations and found that an extra Y chromosome provides more height than an extra X chromosome.
