The Academy has apologised for not publicly supporting Oscar-winning Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal after he was assaulted by Israeli settlers and detained by Israeli military. The Academy said it condemns violence of this kind anywhere in the world. This comes after 600 Oscar voters, including Joaquin Phoenix, Penelope Cruz and Richard Gere, criticised it for failing to defend its filmmakers.
