Friedrich Merz was elected the Chancellor of Germany by the Bundestag, the German Parliament, in a second round of voting after failing to secure a majority in the first round. He fell short of six votes earlier. Notably, as a secret ballot decided the majority, it wasn't clear whether conservative MPs or those of the centre-left coalition didn't back Merz.
