Japanese authorities had ordered the 89 residents of a small southern island to evacuate in the wake of more than 1,000 recent earthquakes in the region. Residents were urged to evacuate to a school playground in Akuseki Island, a municipal official told AFP. No major damage or tsunami threat has been reported, even as authorities urged continued caution.
