Indian Railways carried 2,187 crore passengers in unreserved coaches over the last five financial years, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He said, "Railways operate unreserved non-AC passenger trains/ MEMU / EMU etc for affordable travel.” In 2024-25 alone, 1,250 general coaches were added, Ashwini said. Of 82,200 total coaches, 57,200 are non-AC and 25,000 are AC coaches.
