Japan's Defence Ministry on Tuesday said that two Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted conducting simultaneous operations in the Pacific for the first time. An official said Tokyo would step up surveillance and had conveyed "an appropriate message" to China. Meanwhile, China defended the aircraft carriers' movements, describing them as "fully consistent with international law".
