Archaeologists have discovered a 3,000-year-old Mayan site, Aguada Fénix in Mexico, revealing that it was a cosmogram, a geometric map of the Universe. Coloured pigments, the earliest known in Mesoamerica, were found in the pits, aligned with the four cardinal directions. Blue azurite marks the north, yellow ochre the south, green malachite the east, and pearly seashells the west.
