Three Indians working at the Diamond Cement Factory were kidnapped in Mali, following which MEA expressed concern, calling it a "deplorable act of violence". Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, an outfit linked to Al-Qaeda, which carried out violent attacks in Mali, is suspected to have a role in the kidnapping. MEA asked Mali's government to take steps to secure their release.
