The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday is the sixth-strongest earthquake in history, according to the US Geological Survey. It is the strongest earthquake recorded since 2011. Notably, the fifth-strongest earthquake (9.0-magnitude) also hit Kamchatka in 1952. The most powerful earthquake was recorded in Chile's Biobío in 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5.
