A 91‑year‑old veteran of the 1962 Indo‑China war, Colonel Dr Rajinder Singh, is leading Punjab's fight against drug addiction at his Akal Drug De‑Addiction Centre. Under his direction, the Sangrur facility, established in 2004, blends medical treatment, counselling, vocational training and spiritual therapy. His military background has helped him impart compassionate care to the patients.
