Africa's ecosystems have lost over a third of their natural energy since pre-colonial times, a study stated. It showed how decline of large animals like elephants, rhinos considered ecological engineers, is weakening the natural processes that keep life thriving. Scientists warn this loss weakens nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, water regulation and the livelihoods dependent on nature's balance.
