Over 2,200 people died in the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on Monday, according to the Taliban authorities. Deputy government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said 2,217 people died while nearly 4,000 got injured in the mountainous Kunar province near the border with Pakistan. He added that the rescue efforts are still ongoing.
