The inauguration of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line in June has brought Aizawl, Mizoram's capital, onto India's national rail map. The project was initially conceived in 1999, with the foundation stone laid in 2014. Vinod Kumar, the chief engineer, highlighted how the project had to overcome extraordinary hurdles, including hilly terrain, landslides, and limited working seasons.
