Nagshankar temple complex, ancient temple in Assam, is officially recognised as a model temple for turtle conservation. The temple is home to 13 endangered freshwater turtle species including the black softshell turtle, which was once believed to be extinct. Locals known as 'Kaso Mitras' work with temple authorities to provide planed diets & building artificial sand/nesting banks for the turtles.
