China said that Australia's claim that a Chinese fighter jet dropped flares near one of its maritime patrol planes over the South China Sea is an attempt to cover up Australia's own "intrusion" into Chinese airspace. China said the incident happened around the Paracel Islands. While Australia called the incident "unsafe and unprofessional", China formally issued strong complaint to Canberra.
