Ex-American tennis player Billie Jean King was awarded US Congressional Gold Medal, becoming first individual female athlete to receive the honour. Her fight for equal pay led to the US Open becoming the first Grand Slam tournament to offer men and women equal prize money in 1973. Eleven individual athletes received this honour but before King all had been men.
