California has become the first US state to regulate AI companion chatbots after Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 243 into law. Taking effect in January 2026, it requires companies like OpenAI and Replika to introduce age checks, safety warnings and suicide prevention tools. Chatbots will be banned from posing as doctors or showing sexual content to minors.
