Cancer cells can inject mitochondria into neighboring cells, reprogramming them into cancerous cells, according to a study published in Nature. By injecting mitochondria, the cancer cells implant organelles that contain both genes and machinery to transcribe them. These mitochondria alter the gene expression in recipient cells and induce the release of metabolites, aiding cancer development.
