For diabetic patients, tracking LDL cholesterol alone may miss critical cardiovascular risk. Non-HDL cholesterol—calculated as total cholesterol minus HDL—captures all atherogenic particles including triglyceride-rich lipoproteins common in diabetes. International guidelines recommend non-HDL targets of less than 85 mg/dL for very high-risk patients and less than 100 mg/dL for high-risk patients.
