Scientists have identified a bacterium as cause of a wasting disease that has killed over five billion sea stars along North America's Pacific coast. The epidemic, ongoing for a decade, causes them to grow lesions, following which their arms fall off. The bacteria was detected in tissue samples of dead sea stars that no longer contained fluid that surrounds organs.
