Centre opposes lowering age of consent below 18, cites abuse risk

The Centre told the Supreme Court that it opposes any move to lower the age of consent from 18 years. Emphasising the need for safety, the government said the current age limit of 18 must be "strictly and uniformly enforced". A weakened framework could be misused to justify child abuse under the guise of consent, the centre stated.
