The Indian government has launched an initiative under Gyan Bharatam Mission to preserve and digitise around 50 crore pages of rare manuscripts. These manuscripts are written on various materials such as palm leaves, paper, and cloth, and in multiple languages including Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian. The digitisation process is expected to take around three years to complete, as per government.
